Pg. 03: Roots
My (1)great-great-great-grandfather Hugh Ghormley came to Pennsylvania from Ireland about 1760. Hugh begat Thomas begat William begat Ray begat Roger.
Hugh Banks of Scotland begat James (who emigrated to Pennsylvania about 1750) begat Jane begat Margaret (Beatty) who married David (Ghormley) and had William, Roger’s paternal grandfather.
Charles Botkin of Ireland begat George begat Isaac begat (2)Theodosius (who married Ellen Broadhead) and begat Nell (Ghormley) begat Roger.
That makes me a Scotch-Irishman.

Started from home this Monday morning for old “York State” in company with Nett, Hattie, and Ed. Raining when we started and rained most of the way to Turkey Creek Mill. Went as far as Judge Linton’s and stopped to eat our …
(Pg 174)…Seym said he saw Theo. on the street and that he told him he had got a letter written all ready to send us and hadn’t the courage to send it. Seym advised him to send it. If he does we will of course answer but it will be the first young man I ever wrote a word to except my cousins. (Pg.175) But I wouldn’t think any more of writing to Theo than I would to a cousin. Theo. is a good fellow any way, worth half a dozen of the little insipid fops of Jamestown…….(End of Chapter)
1The information here was gleaned from material I received from Aunt Jessie Murphy and Olive Ghormley several years ago. It is contained in a file folder “Ghormley Tree” in a file drawer in the basement of 2115. I will leave any further genealogy work to others.
2This is the Theodosius referred to by Ellen Broadhead (my maternal grandmother) in her diary about her trip from Mound City, Kansas, to New York state. The reader may recall that Martha Ghormley Sharp “deciphered” the diary, and we published the document, “A Year to Remember”, a few years ago.
