Pg. 01: Preface
Roger’s Remembrances
PREFACE
There has been no great clamor for me to write my “memoirs”. (Maybe one of my kids did mention it once.) In April 1991 John Mengel, a friend of Mary and me, passed away at the age of 91. John had written his “remembrances” some years ago (130 pages, hand written). I so enjoyed reading them that I thought I might follow John’s example. Also, I was much impressed by the little green book of pictures and “Memories of 90 Years” put together by Stanley Farwell, Nettie Campbell’s father. I have even stolen an idea or two from it. (Thank you, Nettie, for its loan.) Since I have only about 30 more years left (ha!), I better get started.
What “medium” to use? I have chosen the written word as simpler and easier than audio or video tape. Besides, I’d have to get dressed up for the latter.
Things are divided into roughly periods of time or types of events. Though this is not an historical treatise, occasionally I’ve included some history-type stuff which I felt to be interesting, such as Dad’s trip on the cattle boat to Europe. I have stuck to the Truth as nearly as I can remember it. It has been (and still is) a happy life — with a few rough spots. (Some of the spots were rough enough that I left them out to protect the guilty.)
Daughter Martha commented that she hoped there would be pictures, so I bought myself a 1991 Christmas present of a Logitec “scanner” for the computer. The snapshots contained herein lose quite a bit between the original and the printed page, but perhaps they are better than nothing.
After I got started I found that memories often came “flooding back” (though a lot of time they didn’t). I got a little wordy — but I guess you don’t have to read it if you don’t feel like it. Anyhow, I’ve had fun doing it.
